Cytopathology focuses on the microscopic examination of single cells obtained from body fluids or tissues. It is widely used in screening programs such as the Pap smear test to detect precancerous or cancerous changes in the cervix. Cytopathologists also use samples obtained from fine needle aspirates (FNAs) from masses or cysts in organs such as the thyroid, breast, or lymph nodes, and play an important role in identifying cancers, infections, and inflammation at the cellular level.
