Neuropathology

Neuropathology is a subfield of pathology that deals with the diagnosis of diseases of the nervous system, including the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves. By examining tissue samples from these areas, usually obtained through biopsy or postmortem examinations, neuropathologists help diagnose a variety of diseases, including brain tumors, neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, infections (such as encephalitis), traumatic brain injuries, and multiple sclerosis (MS). This specialty also studies abnormalities of the nervous system in developmental disorders and provides vital insights into the progression of neurological diseases, which is very useful for making decisions about the treatment of patients.
